Updates for September 17 -

End of Day Dismissal

Kindergarten dismissal is a teacher – caregiver hand off for the whole school year.  In grades 1 and 2, teachers have been walking classes to the class meeting spot each day since August 31.  Students are now familiar with this routine and will begin walking to their family meeting spots independently on Monday; teachers will escort them to the door.  Students in grades 3-5 are dismissed from their classrooms.

There are a number of parents who phone the school at the end of the day to change dismissal plans.  The office cannot always relay messages.  It is important that families have a designated meeting spot and that parents are on time for pick up.  If you need to make an adjustment for the end of day plan, we require the request in writing addressed to buffalorubbingstone@cbe.ab.ca before 2:00 pm so we can relay the message to the teacher.  Do not email teachers during the school day as they will not likely receive the message.  This change in protocol is essential to support student safety.

Demographic Forms

Thank you to the families of 453 students who have completed their demographic verifications – that's a 77% completion rate!  We are missing forms from 135 students.  All families received an email from the Calgary Board of Education on September 2 - Subject: Action Required Complete online forms by Monday, September 14.  On Tuesday, September 15, families with overdue forms received a reminder email. These forms are a legal requirement from Alberta Education and Childcare.  The school’s Alberta Government funding is dependent on their completion and accuracy.  There are complete instructions in the email.  If your forms are overdue, please complete them today.

Terry Fox Run - Friday, September 18

On Friday, September 18, Buffalo Rubbing Stone School will participate in the 46th annual Terry Fox Run! Thank you to all the parents who have volunteered!  So far this week, our Toonies for Terry campaign has raised about $500.  If you choose, students are welcome to bring money to school.  The teachers will collect it each day.  Alternatively, families are welcome to donate online at https://schools.terryfox.ca/137582.

Treaty 7 Week – September 21-25

Next week, we will recognize the 149th anniversary of the signing of Treaty 7.  Treaty 7 was a promise made between the Crown and the Blackfoot Confederacy to share the land and live well together, in peace for ‘as long as the sun shines, the grass grows, and the river flows.’  Living well together is something we strive to do everyday at BRS.  We will be focused on how it looks and feels to live well together at school and how our actions with one another every day make a difference in the world.

 Photo Day

Wednesday, September 23 is photo day.  Bright smiles and favourite clothes always look good in a photo!

Whole School Field Trip to the Jubilee Auditorium – Tuesday, September 29

The performance at the Jubilee Auditorium is focused on Alberta Arts and Culture.  The event will include performances from Madhuban Performing Arts, Calgary Opera, Ginger Beef, Pandynamix, Dandodance, Dancers of Treaty 7, Wakefield Brewster, and Fraid Knot.  We encourage everyone to wear their traditional cultural celebratory clothing, if they choose.  Consent Forms went home earlier this week; please return them by tomorrow.  As outlined in the parent letter, the whole school will be on this field trip from 11:45 am until 2:30 pm.  There will be no morning kindergarten that day as all students will attend in the afternoon.

Staff Parking Lot

Please remember the staff parking lot is restricted to staff use and may not be accessed for student drop-off or pick-up.  Please choose safety over convenience.

Brown Bagging 4 Calgary Kids (BB4CK)

BB4CK provides prepared healthy lunches to Calgary schools for students who are in need. Through this program we are able to provide daily lunches to some of our students. If you feel as though your family would benefit from this program, please contact assistant principal, Jill Neufeld at jmneufeld@cbe.ab.ca

Take good care,
